Miss Myanmar Swe Zin Htet came out as gay just a few days ago, and now she’s the first openly gay contestant in the Miss Universe competition, airing tonight.
“I have that platform that, if I say that I’m a lesbian, it will have a big impact on the LGBTQ community back in Burma. The difficult thing is that in Burma, LGBTQ people are not accepted…they are looked down on by other people and are being discriminated against,” Miss Myanmar told People.
About coming out just days ago, she said, “It’s like I just started a new chapter in life.”
She also revealed she has been in a three-year relationship with Burmese singer Gae Gae.
Swe Zin Htet also spoke about her parents and how they did not accept her at first when she told them.
“At first, they were mad. They didn’t accept me. But later, when they found out more about the LGBTQ community, they started to accept me,” she added.
Tune into the Miss Universe competition tonight at 7pm ET on ABC.
