Former NFL Player George Atkinson III Dies at 27, One Year After Brother's Suicide

George Atkinson III has sadly died.

The former NFL player, who played for the Oakland Raiders and the Cleveland Browns and was the son of Super Bowl champion George Atkinson II, died at the age of 27, according to People on Tuesday (December 3).

A cause of death has not yet been reported.

His death comes one year after his twin brother, running back Josh Atkinson, died by suicide.

George was open about his struggle to grieve his twin brother, opening up in a letter as recently as October, and recalling the death of their mother, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. He also said his brother felt guilty over their mother’s death. He was also institutionalized for self-harm. He admitted he was “still struggling” in the letter.

“It’s a release for me to tell all of you my story because if my pain teaches you how to express yourself during hard times, everything that I lost can turn into a gift that I can give to all of you to help you live more positive lives,” he wrote.

He is survived by his 2-year-old daughter.
